Incredible Vehicles

On Four Wheels

Bloodhound SSC - supersonic car

*

1000 mph rocket car

Bloodhound SSC is the latest vehicle from land speed record veteran, Richard Noble. His previous project, Thrust SSC, successfully broke the sound-barrier for the first time in a car and reached an amazing 763 mph in 1997. This time Richard and his team are aiming for an incredible 1000 miles-per-hour - which is the same speed that the sun sets around the world as it turns.

Bloodhound will be powered by a prototype jet engine from the Eurofighter Typhoon, plus an additional rocket engine sitting on top which between them should generate an extraordinary 21 tonnes of thrust out of the back. Incredibly, it needs an 800 horsepower petrol engine just to pump enough fuel to the jet engine. At the speeds it will be going, it requires flight control surfaces to keep it on the very fine line between launching off into the sky and burying itself into the desert - and the brave (or foolish) soul destined to drive it is ex-Tornado pilot Wing Commander Andy Green.

It is expected to get to 1000mph in only 40 seconds, and needs wheels built from solid titanium to stop them flying apart at 10,000 rpm (let’s hope he doesn’t hit a rock…)
